Staff Album Review - Katie

Kevin Rudolf is most notably praised for his smash hit “Let It Rock,” and on his debut record, he proves that he can do just that. “In the City” describes the highs and lows of living in New York City, where free thought and chaos run rampant. You can almost visualize Rudolf as a wild teen, sneaking into clubs and jumping onto Manhattan rooftops late at night.

Coz in the city of dreams, you get caught up in the schemes and fall apart in the seam tonight. That boy would play his guitar like he was ready for war, and then he’d lift up his voice to the sky…” –from the track N.Y.C.

Although “In the City” is primarily a compilation of edgy beats with lyrics defying social conformity, it’s Rudolf’s slower melodies which provoke the soul and draw one in. He has three songs which fit this mold- they are “Great Escape,” “I Song,” and “Scarred.”

She must have left me asleep; she never said goodbye. Her angels took her away~ I guess now she can fly…”- as in Scarred.

Rudolf’s style is unique in that he combines rock with the current popular style of synthetic pop (ala Lady Gaga and Kanye West.) He has mastered the art of catchy hooks- you can definitely feel Rudolf’s soul and the unparallel electricity of New York City throughout his album.

A little more on Rudolf’s background…

Throughout the Chicago-land radio stations, you can hear Rudolf’s “Let It Rock,” “Shooting Star,” and “Welcome to the World.” “Let It Rock” features Lil’ Wayne + it’s Rudolf’s most popular track to date- primarily responsible for putting him on the map! “Shooting Star” features Rudolf and Pitbull, with David Rush as the main musical mistro- unfortunately, it can not be found on Rudolf’s album, “In the City.” The last song is obtaining recent radio play, and it is called “Welcome to the World,” featuring Kid Cudi (of the hit smash “Day ‘n’ Night” with Kanye West.)

According to Wikipedia, Kevin Rudolf is signed to Cash Money Records, and is a singer-songwriter, as well as a record producer. He was born in New York City, and raised by a single mother~ although he grew up and currently resides in Miami, Florida. Rudolf initially started playing the guitar at the young age of 12, and he has collaborated with the following artists (either as a producer, writer or a guitarist): Nelly Furtado, Timbaland, Black Eyed Peas, Lil’ Kim, LL Cool J, Justin Timberlake, Kevin Lyttle, Kanye West, Britney Spears, David Banner, T.I., Flo-RIda, The Neptunes, Rick Ross, Lil Wayne, Ludacris, and Nas.
